When I talk to people about their biggest challenges in their online businesses, the same points come up again and again. Many are related to limiting beliefs, and it seems they are very common. The fact is that if you have these limiting beliefs, then you are sabotaging yourself. You will need to push through and overcome and remove these beliefs if you are to be successful.
If you have a belief that is an obstacle to you doing something, then whilst you hold that belief, it will cause you to fail in that endeavour. If you want something, you need to remove any obstacle to you achieving it.
I talked about limiting beliefs in a prior post. Basically, the first step is to realize that these beliefs are only beliefs. They are not the truth. However, because many of these beliefs are seated in your childhood and have been there a long time, or have been put there recently by doubters you have encountered as you started your business, they become the truth for you. If this rings true with you, then you need to take steps to change the beliefs and/or remove them. Because until you do, they will stop you from getting what you want.
There are two challenges that come up in discussion more times than any other. They are as follows:
Believing you are no expert, and therefore are not equipped to teach others.
If this is you, this belief really boils down to a lack of confidence and the desire to back yourself. You believe that since there have been other people around for ages, you are not good enough, whereas the fact is that there are people out there that need you specifically due to your personal qualities and skills, not anyone else and you are more than good enough. The world is massive, there are millions of people online every day that need their problems solved, and many of these people need you.
You see, the fact is as soon as you learn something, you know something many other people do not. Therefore you become an expert in the eyes of many and have value to offer. Then add to this your personal qualities. So the process for presenting as the expert is to get focused and pick a subject, study it, learn it and then practice it. Once you know it, you can then teach it. All you need to do is to stay one step ahead of your prospects and customers and you will be seen as the expert by them. Someone once said to me that perception is the observer’s reality. So expertise is simply your perception and indeed it is also that of your customers.
So if you have this belief, it is your current reality. It is not the truth and you can change it.
Believing Technology is too hard to master, made harder by it forever changing.
I hear this from the more life experienced people I talk to. Many claim their capabilities to be limited to being able to send and receive email. Using the social media sites or having and managing a blog they see as far beyond them.
The truth is that technology is a challenge and that will not change. The truth is also that most of us online marketers struggle with technology. However we accept that, and we do not let it become an obstacle that stops us. The fact is, we need technology and we need to leverage it in order to be successful.
If you have a belief that technology is stopping you from being successful, you need to change that belief, your perception, today. Part of this is that you believe you need to learn how to do it all yourself. You do not. There are many people who can help you with the set up. When it comes to operation after the set up, many of the things you really need to get done are automated or there are simple step by step videos and courses that show you how. So in reality, technology and the continual change is not your problem, your belief that you need to do it all yourself is.
So for example, if you want a blog created, you firstly find an existing blog with a design you like. That is colours, headers, side bars, optin boxes, etc, that appeal. Often it will be a standard theme. You then have a technical person build it like that for you. All you need to do is decide what you need done, hire someone to do it, and show them what you want. They will then get it done for you. In the case of a WordPress.org blog, technical set up is quite automated and there are hundreds of free plug-ins available that are simply loaded and perform all sorts of powerful functions.
So again, if this resonates with you, your belief is not the truth, it is just your perception and you can and should change it.
Time to push through
I hope that this post has helped you get on the path to removing in particular, these two limiting beliefs you may have about obstacles to your online success. Realize that a belief is not necessarily the truth. There are many challenges you come up against when starting a business, and I find many of them are associated with limiting beliefs. Here I discussed simple methods for removing these two limiting beliefs, however, I acknowledge that some limiting beliefs are deep seated and it takes a little more to deal with those. There exists more advanced and powerful tools for dealing with limiting beliefs, so if you need some more help with this let me know and I will point you in the right direction.

Hey Ian…thanks for the great post! I think it is common to mankind to have these types of self-imposed limits but the great people always overcome…usually through much trials and struggles.
I think of Thomas Edison…he failed thousands of times but never wavered in his belief that it was possible to create the light bulb. He is one of the greatest people who ever lived and yet he failed so many times it makes any sane person’s head spin.
It is like that for most highly successful people in life in nearly any area…failure comes and then we make a choice…do we continue and hold fast to what we believe we can accomplish or do we listen to our culture or whatever and go on to something “sensible.”
Blessings…
